The B2100 Old Man’s El Clásico

On a glorious Sunday afternoon, local rivals Jarvis Brook made the short pilgrimage down the B2100 to the Rotherfield recreation ground for what has become affectionately known as The Old Man’s El Clásico. Sunshine, a decent crowd, and two teams full of creaking joints — all that was missing was a comeback win that, after 37 minutes, looked wildly unlikely.

Rotherfield actually started brightly. With returning skipper Riley marshalling the defence and Garrett organising absolutely everything else, the Greens kept the ball well and produced some neat build‑up play in the opening minutes. Then, with their first venture into our half in the 5th minute, Jarvis Brook somehow found themselves 0–1 up. Football can be cruel!

Still, heads stayed up and Rotherfield continued to play the better football, even if the final-third decisions occasionally resembled a raffle draw. With the heat rising, a drinks break arrived — along with the first rotation: Brooker for Oddy (who had taken the “run yourself into the ground” brief a little too literally), Hodges for Thompson, and DT for Alun.

Despite the changes, Rotherfield kept control of the game… only to fall 0–2 behind from Jarvis Brook’s second meaningful attack, a corner where their height advantage did the damage.

But this team doesn’t fold. Not anymore.

Wilkins decided enough was enough, took the game by the scruff of the neck, and became borderline unplayable. His goal pulled Rotherfield back into it. Moments later, on the stroke of half-time, King — who had been marauding forward like a man who’d forgotten he was a defender — delivered a sumptuous back‑post corner. DT rose, guided his header back across the keeper, and found the top corner. 2–2, fully deserved.

Half-Time: 2–2

McInnes and guest assistant Watts shuffled the pack again at the break, bringing back Evans, Oddy and Thompson. The football only improved. Thompson began pulling strings in midfield, Wilkins continued terrorising the Brook defence with his pace, and Hodges caused problems on the opposite flank.

The pressure finally told around the hour mark: Oddy cut the ball back beautifully and Wilkins smashed home his second. 3–2 — the comeback complete.

Mansford made way for Matt Moore, who brought his usual calmness to the final half-hour. Another drinks break followed, with McGuire returning for Riley, Ashton replacing King, Brooker for Oddy, and DT for Evans.

For those who’ve watched the Vets this season, a late lead is usually a source of mild panic. But not today. Instead, fans were treated to the pirouettes, spins and drag-backs of centre-back Seb Chick, who embarked on an unexpected forward run that will live long in the memory.

The game was sealed when Thompson put the icing on the cake, smashing home Rotherfield’s fourth past the helpless keeper.

Full-Time: Rotherfield Vets 4–2 Jarvis Brook Vets

A brilliant way to end the season — arguably the best all‑round team performance of the campaign, with all 16 players contributing superbly.

As the season closes, we’ll reflect on the good, the bad, and the occasionally very ugly… and then go again. If you’re reading this and fancy joining the squad next season, get in touch.
