A superb comeback performance on a blustery spring afternoon
A beautiful but windy spring day set the scene for the third meeting of the season between Rotherfield and league‑leaders Woodingdean Vets. The hosts had edged the cup fixture on penalties earlier in the year, while Woodingdean had snatched a late winner in the league a month ago. With Rotherfield coming off a strong win against Horsham, this promised to be an intriguing contest.
A nightmare start – then the fightback begins
The match began at a frantic pace, with a couple of early errors gifting Woodingdean a 0–2 lead inside the opening ten minutes. In previous seasons, that might have caused heads to drop – but not with this group.
Excellent play down the right released Wilkins into the box. After turning his marker, he nudged the ball past the last defender and was brought down. Penalty to the Greens.
In the reverse fixture, Alun Evans had rattled his spot‑kick off the crossbar. This time he made no mistake, calmly placing the ball into the bottom-left corner to halve the deficit.
Momentum shifts as Rotherfield take control
Rotherfield grew into the game superbly. The central trio of Garrett, Mansford and Thompson dictated play, providing the platform for the pace of Wilkins and Oddy to stretch the Woodingdean defence. It was Oddy who levelled the match: bursting through on a quick counter, rounding the goalkeeper and rolling the ball into the empty net to make it 2–2.
After a shaky opening spell, the defence settled brilliantly, shutting down Woodingdean’s attacks and seeing out the half on level terms.
Second‑half changes and the breakthrough
No changes were made at the break, but early in the second half Oddy made way for Harkness, and Ashton replaced Hodges. The Greens continued to threaten, though several promising moves were halted by the linesman’s flag.
With Thompson – who was having his best game of the season – beginning to tire, Danny Taylor entered the fray sporting brand‑new boots and socks (end‑of‑season bargains, apparently).
With Hodges pulling up lame, Thompson was asked to go back on and revert to his primary school days and play on the left wing by assistant manager for the day, Wattsy, and within minutes, Rotherfield had completed the turnaround. A superb cross from Thompson found Wilkins, who finished clinically at the second attempt to make it 3–2.
A nervy lead… then breathing space
Anyone who has watched the Vets this season knows a one‑goal lead late on is never comfortable. But the team kept pushing, and a slick move down the right saw Tsang slide a pass in behind the defence for Wilkins to chase. He was brought down, and the Woodingdean defender then threw the ball into Wilkins’ face before arguing with the referee – earning himself a booking and a spell in the sin‑bin.
With Evans off the pitch, Taylor stepped up and coolly slotted the penalty into the bottom corner, giving Rotherfield a 4–2 cushion.
A deserved victory over the league leaders
The final minutes passed without drama, and Rotherfield claimed a thoroughly deserved win over table‑topping Woodingdean. It was a performance full of grit, character and quality from all 15 players – arguably the best display of the season, especially given the early setback.
Two home games remain over the next two Sundays as the season draws to a close. Your support is always appreciated – come up and get behind the lads.
