Rotherfield welcomed Cuckfield Rangers to the Recreation Ground on Saturday in a difficult encounter, with the hosts looking to build on the previous week's victory over Crowhurst.

However, Rotherfield found themselves punished on several occasions for a lack of alertness when defending set pieces.

The visitors opened the scoring from an unlikely source. A free kick inside their own half on the left saw the Rangers goalkeeper come well out of his area. Rather than delivering the long ball many expected, he opted for a short free kick, catching the hosts off guard. A cross-field ball followed, and Rotherfield found themselves 0–1 down.

The Greens responded positively, with Tommy Overton providing the perfect response to bring his side level. However, the equaliser was short-lived.

Rangers were awarded a throw-in level with Rotherfield's penalty area, where ineffective marking allowed the receiving player to turn almost unopposed, unsettling Gurney and nestling his effort into the net.

Rangers then rounded off an excellent first half by extending their advantage to three goals, leaving Rotherfield with a mountain to climb after the break.

Second Half Response

Rotherfield emerged from the interval with real intent, striking the woodwork twice within the opening two minutes.

The hosts continued to threaten going forward, creating multiple opportunities and demonstrating a willingness to take the game to their opponents. However, their finishing lacked the clinical edge required to turn those chances into goals.

Rotherfield also won a number of corners, but disappointing deliveries prevented them from making the most of those opportunities.

Despite their efforts to fight their way back into the contest, Rangers eventually added a fourth to complete the scoring.

A frustrating afternoon for the Greens, who showed greater attacking intent after the interval but were ultimately undone by defensive lapses and missed opportunities.
