Cole and Peevor Complete Comeback

Mid Sussex Football League Senior Charity Cup – Round One

Rotherfield booked their place in the next round of the Mid Sussex Football League Senior Charity Cup with an impressive 2–1 victory over Reigate Priory, coming from behind to defeat the second-placed league side in an entertaining afternoon at the Recreation Ground.

With injuries forcing further changes to the starting line-up, Rotherfield welcomed Owen Ridley into the heart of defence, while Daniel Moronfolu made his debut between the posts.

The hosts started brightly and created a golden opportunity to take the lead after 15 minutes. Michael Peevor delivered a dangerous ball from the right, which Ed Handford met with a header. It looked destined for the net, but the Reigate Priory goalkeeper produced an outstanding save to somehow keep the ball out.

Rotherfield continued to threaten and were handed the chance to go ahead ten minutes later when Dan Gray was brought down inside the penalty area. Gray stepped up to take the spot-kick but unfortunately sent his effort over the crossbar, leaving the scores level at the break.

Visitors strike first, but Rotherfield respond

Reigate Priory made the breakthrough five minutes into the second half, converting a cross from the left with a header to put the visitors 1–0 ahead.

Rotherfield refused to let their heads drop and pushed for an equaliser. Handford tested the visiting goalkeeper with a well-struck effort around the 65-minute mark, only to be denied again. Gray then tried his luck with a low, curling effort that drifted just wide of the post.

The pressure eventually told in the 70th minute. Elliot Cole showed good footwork to beat his marker before unleashing an effort from outside the penalty area, finding the net to bring Rotherfield level at 1–1.

With the game entering its closing stages, Rotherfield sensed an opportunity to claim the victory. Their persistence was rewarded when Cole produced an excellent chipped pass over the Reigate Priory defence for Michael Peevor, who finished to put the hosts 2–1 ahead.

Rotherfield hold firm to secure the win

There was still time for further chances as Rotherfield looked to put the result beyond doubt. A free-kick was delivered across the box for Sam Murray, whose header was well saved by the visiting goalkeeper.

Handford came close again from another free-kick, sending his effort just over the crossbar, before Cole produced more excellent footwork to release Jacob Prince. Prince connected with a half-volley, but his effort sailed over.

Despite those opportunities, Rotherfield were forced to dig deep during the final five minutes as Reigate Priory pushed for a late equaliser. The home side defended resolutely to see out the remaining pressure and secure a hard-earned cup victory.

Against a side sitting second in the league, Rotherfield showed character, resilience and quality to turn the game around after falling behind. Cole's equaliser and superb assist for Peevor's winner proved decisive, while the team battled collectively to see out the closing stages.

It was a pleasing afternoon for Rotherfield, who overcame further selection challenges and a difficult opponent to progress in the Senior Charity Cup.
