Another busy weekend of youth football for Rotherfield FC, with cup battles, competitive league fixtures, individual highlights and plenty of positive signs of development across our junior teams. From hard-fought performances against strong opposition to valuable learning experiences on the training ground, there was lots to celebrate across the club.

U8s – Learning, Playing and Developing

Our U8s welcomed Tonbridge Juniors on Saturday, with the coaches facing the challenge of giving 17 players meaningful football and keeping everyone engaged throughout the morning.

The group was split into three teams, rotating so that players could experience match situations while others took part in a high-energy training game. Everyone got the opportunity to get involved, and there were plenty of positives to take away.

The coaches are continuing to learn more about each player's strengths and areas for development, helping to shape future sessions and keep the youngsters enjoying their football.

U9s – Building on Progress

The U9s enjoyed another productive training session, building on the success of the previous weekend.

The focus was on quick feet, taking on defenders, and beginning to develop passing through the lines to identify and exploit gaps in defensive shape.

Players of the Week: Jamie and Charlie, recognised for listening to the coaching advice and making a real effort to apply it in match situations. Great work, boys!

U10s – Plenty of Positives Against Tonbridge

The U10s hosted Tonbridge Juniors Hornets in a close and competitive fixture against good opposition.

Rotherfield controlled large parts of the game, edging possession and creating chances, with Albie getting on the scoresheet. However, a couple of mistakes in possession were punished by the visitors.

Despite the disappointment of the final scoreline, there were plenty of positives, and the squad can take confidence from the way they competed. The team is already looking forward to the return fixture.

Players of the Week:

  • Charlie: Excellent goalkeeping and superb decision-making when joining the build-up, helping to create space for his teammates.

  • Lucus and Albie: Formed a composed and confident defensive partnership in the second half, bringing calmness to the team's play, with Albie also contributing a goal.

U11s – A Strong Response

The U11s also hosted Tonbridge Juniors and showed real character after a difficult first half.

Following an honest half-time conversation about what needed to change, the boys took responsibility and returned with greater intent, passion and determination. Their response was excellent, producing a much-improved second-half performance.

There were goals from Wills, Reuben and Caelan, with George and Wills also combining for assists. Just as importantly, the team showed pride in the way they conducted themselves, with Wills encouraging an opposition defender to calm down and enjoy playing football — a lovely example of the Rotherfield way.

Players of the Week:

  • George: The parents' choice, recognised for his outstanding defensive work and terrier-like determination.

  • Mason: The coaches' choice for his commitment and ability to disrupt the opposition's play time and time again.

A performance to be proud of, particularly the response after half-time.

U11 Girls – Another Late Winner!

The U11 girls welcomed Chipstead for the return fixture following last week's thrilling encounter.

With expectations high after the previous meeting, chances proved harder to come by this time around. Rotherfield edged the first half, but the Chipstead goalkeeper made some excellent saves to keep things goalless.

Changes at half-time brought fresh energy, and Chipstead arguably enjoyed the better of the second half. However, with only minutes remaining, the ball fell to Devon on the edge of the box, and she rifled a superb strike into the top corner to secure a memorable late winner.

That's three wins from three for the girls, who continue to go from strength to strength!

Player of the Match: Devon, for her decisive contribution when it mattered most.

U12s – Lessons from a Cup Challenge

The U12s faced Otford in the cup against opposition playing in a higher division.

It was a tough day, but there were some encouraging individual performances and valuable lessons to take away. These are exactly the kinds of challenges that help young players develop, and the squad will be determined to learn from the experience and come back stronger.

Players of the Match:

  • Henry: Recognised by captain Dougie for his dogged determination.

  • Luke: The coaches' choice for continuing to fight and compete when the game became difficult.

U13s – A Cup Performance to Be Proud Of

The U13s produced an excellent performance in a cup tie against a strong Sevenoaks side who had proved difficult opponents in previous seasons.

Rotherfield showed just how much the boys have developed, competing confidently and taking the lead for much of the game. Two superbly executed set-piece goals, including a spectacular half-volley, highlighted the quality on display.

There was even an opportunity to extend the advantage further, but a missed chance proved costly as tiredness began to creep in during the closing stages.

Although the result didn't go Rotherfield's way, the performance was a real sign of progress. The boys can be proud of how they competed against an unbeaten side and should take plenty of confidence into their next challenge.

U14 Girls – Cup Progress with Plenty of Football

The U14 girls faced Tonbridge in the cup, with the opposition arriving short of players. Both clubs agreed to play nine-a-side to ensure the fixture could go ahead.

Before kick-off, the Rotherfield coaches made it clear that the priority was to play good football, rotate the squad and show respect to an opposition team facing difficulties.

The girls put together some lovely passing moves and demonstrated their growing desire to play football the right way. With a strong squad available, there were opportunities to rotate players and experiment with different positions.

The second half saw further positional changes, including defenders moving into attacking roles and forwards dropping back. The team continued to dominate possession and create opportunities, while the emphasis remained on development rather than running up the score.

There were eight different goalscorers, highlighting the contribution of the whole squad.

Players of the Match:

  • Rotherfield: Oriana.

  • Opposition: Poppy.

The girls now look ahead to a quarter-final meeting with Seddlescombe. Another big cup challenge awaits!

U16 Renegades – Warriors in the Cup

The Renegades were involved in a fiercely contested cup battle against Pembury, who play in a higher division.

The team fought hard throughout and pushed their opponents all the way in a narrow defeat. There was plenty of determination and commitment on display, and the players can be proud of the way they competed against higher-level opposition.

U16 Razorbacks – Resilience Pays Off

The U16 Razorbacks were given a scare in their cup tie before showing real resilience to come from behind and book their place in the quarter-finals.

It was a reminder that cup football rarely comes easy, but the team showed the determination needed to find a way through when under pressure.

A special mention also goes to Jon Elms, who received excellent feedback from opposition supporters for his refereeing performance. Great to see recognition for officials helping to make grassroots football a positive experience for everyone!

A Weekend of Development and Team Spirit

Across the age groups, this weekend provided a reminder of what junior football is all about: learning, improving, supporting teammates and respecting opponents.

There were cup progressions, hard-fought contests, individual moments of quality and plenty of evidence that our young players are developing both on and off the pitch.

Well done to all our players, coaches, volunteers and parents for their continued support.

Up the Rother!
