Rotherfield produced an excellent response to last week's disappointing away defeat, battling to a deserved 2-1 victory over a strong Crowhurst side at home.

The opening half was a closely contested affair, with both teams enjoying spells of possession and looking to impose themselves on the game. Crowhurst were patient in their build-up play and repeatedly probed around the edge of the Rotherfield penalty area, but the home defence stood firm and denied the visitors any clear-cut opportunities.

At the other end, Rotherfield looked particularly dangerous down both flanks. The Greens repeatedly found joy out wide, delivering a series of inviting crosses into the box, although none quite fell for the finishing touch they deserved.

There was an early moment of alarm for the home side when goalkeeper Gurney appeared to drop the ball on his own goal line. Crowhurst appealed, but neither match official judged the ball to have crossed the line, allowing Rotherfield to escape.

Further forward, the attacking trio of Overton, McLeod and Morrow linked up impressively throughout the half, while the energetic Spampanato was a constant threat breaking from midfield and helped create a number of promising opportunities.

Despite the pressure from both teams, the deadlock remained unbroken and Rotherfield were perhaps the happier of the two sides as the teams went into the interval at 0-0.

The second half continued in much the same vein until a tactical tweak by the home side changed the complexion of the match. The introduction of Gray on the right flank, coupled with a positional switch for Morrow, paid immediate dividends.

Morrow showed tremendous strength in the centre of the park, wrestling possession away from his marker before releasing Gray down the right. Gray beat his man and delivered an excellent cross into the area, where Spampanato arrived to emphatically fire home from 12 yards, finding the top corner to put Rotherfield 1-0 ahead.

The goal sparked a sustained period of pressure from Crowhurst, with Rotherfield forced deeper as they defended the edge of their penalty area. Outstanding defensive work from Bowen, Mintrim and Kerslake proved crucial, with a series of last-ditch tackles preserving the lead.

Rotherfield remained a threat on the counter-attack and eventually doubled their advantage. Gallie released Morrow with a perfectly weighted pass, and the forward once again demonstrated his strength and determination to break free from his defender. Driving forward at pace, Morrow kept his composure and drilled a fine finish into the bottom corner to make it 2-0.

The Greens continued to create chances and might have added a third but for several excellent saves from the Crowhurst goalkeeper.

The visitors refused to give up and were handed a lifeline when a poorly judged corner caused confusion inside the six-yard box, allowing Crowhurst to sweep home and reduce the deficit to 2-1.

Crowhurst nearly drew level immediately from the restart, only for Gurney to produce a magnificent one-on-one save to keep Rotherfield in front.

The visitors threw numbers forward in search of an equaliser and continued to press until the final whistle. However, the experienced Rotherfield side stood strong, defending resolutely while still looking dangerous on the break. As the clock ticked down, the Greens managed the game expertly to secure a hard-earned and thoroughly deserved victory.
