MATCH REPORT: AFC Varndeanians vs Reserves

On a day when everything that could go wrong did with a capital D, the result was not a surprise. Credit must go the AFC Vs though who played good football & had all the outstanding players.
However with Oskar Furman stepping forward to keep goal in the absence of others & only two substitutes meaning all at least achieved good minutes, the character of most of the Rotherfield players was to their credit. Tenacious, determined & gutsy were valid adjectives for most but with some letting their team mates down in the first half especially with weak performances it was not a surprise when the greens were two nil down after 15 minutes. During this time they did at least perfect their defending of corners as eight were conceded & repelled. At least the management thought they had perfected this, but then a free header from corner number 9 meant it was 3-0 at the break.
The two subs were introduced at the break & the visitors did at least stem the wound for 25 minutes plus they threatened a little offensively.
Then in the final 15 mins fatigue became evident & the superior AFC Vs scored a couple more. Neither were gifts however but down to good play, pleasing for the neutral!
It was a chastening afternoon for the greens who were outclassed by better footballers. That alone is not an issue but the home side were fitter, stronger & more determined which should be a challenge to the greens as if they want to, they can improve in all three areas with hard work. The question is if hard work scares or excites?
Squad Furman, Hodges, Draper, Ridley, Sutton, Bristow, Zabadne, Birdsall, Alexander, Thomas, Blackstone.
Subs Lelliott, King
Man of match Jack D
