MATCH REPORT: Frenches Athletic 4–2 Rotherfield Firsts

Gray Hooper Holt LLP Mid-Sussex Football League Premier Division
Rotherfield made the trip to South Park Reigate’s 3G Stadium on Whitehall Lane for a later-than-usual 3pm kick-off. Heavy rain and strong winds, brought by Storm Boelo, persisted throughout the match, creating challenging conditions for both sides.
Despite the difficult weather, Rotherfield started brightly and took the lead after 12 minutes. Elliot Cole showed excellent footwork to jink past his opponent before finding the back of the net to give Rotherfield an early advantage.
Ed Handford came close to extending the lead eight minutes later, unleashing a ferocious effort from distance that narrowly cleared the crossbar.
On 35 minutes, Cole produced a superb volleyed pass out to Dan Gray, who laid the ball off for Bailey Mintrim. Mintrim struck his effort well, but unfortunately for Rotherfield, the ball crashed against the crossbar rather than finding the net.
Having looked capable of increasing their advantage, Rotherfield were left frustrated as the momentum shifted dramatically in the closing stages of the first half.
Frenches Athletic levelled the score in the 37th minute with a long-range effort that flew into the top corner. Just two minutes later, the hosts struck again with an almost identical finish to turn the game on its head and make it 2–1.
The situation worsened for Rotherfield in the 42nd minute when poor defending allowed a Frenches attacker too much time and space to get a shot away, extending the home side’s advantage to 3–1 before the break.
Rotherfield continued to look for a way back into the contest and were given a lifeline in the 87th minute. Ronnie Conlon was fouled inside the penalty area, and John Sinclair stepped up to convert the resulting spot-kick, reducing the deficit to 3–2 and setting up a tense finish.
There was still time for further drama as Rotherfield threatened to find an equaliser. A defensive header back towards the goalkeeper was not dealt with cleanly at the first attempt, almost presenting the visitors with the opportunity they needed.
However, the final twist went against Rotherfield. Goalkeeper Daniel Moronfolu was set to receive a ball back, but his fellow centre back headed the ball beyond Moronfolu and allowing a Frenches forward to capitalise and score into the unguarded goal to seal a 4–2 victory for the hosts.
Rotherfield will be disappointed to come away without a result after taking an early lead and striking the crossbar while the game was still finely balanced. Ultimately, a difficult spell towards the end of the first half proved costly, and despite Sinclair’s late penalty giving the visitors hope, Frenches Athletic did enough to secure the points.
With Storm Boelo bringing persistent heavy rain and strong winds throughout the afternoon, conditions were far from ideal. Rotherfield will now look to regroup and turn their promising opening into a more consistent performance over the full 90 minutes in their next fixture.
