Dan Gray’s Late Strike Sends Rotherfield Through in Sussex County FA Cup

Sussex County FA Cup | The Rise Electrical Gibbons Memorial Field

Rotherfield booked their place in the next round of the Sussex County FA Cup with a hard-fought 1–0 victory away at Hollington United, thanks to Dan Gray’s excellent long-range strike 11 minutes from time.

In a closely contested cup tie, Rotherfield showed patience and defensive resilience before finding the breakthrough late in the second half, with a determined rearguard action ensuring they returned home with the win.

Rotherfield started brightly, with Bailey Mintrim going close inside the opening five minutes as his cross-cum-shot clipped the far post. Hollington responded eight minutes later, sending an effort over the crossbar, before Mintrim again threatened in the 19th minute with a strike from outside the box that drifted narrowly wide.

The visitors continued to build pressure and came close to opening the scoring in the 25th minute when an effort was saved. From the resulting corner, John Sinclair flashed the ball across goal before another delivery found Ed Handford, whose header went narrowly wide.

Hollington thought they had taken the lead two minutes later when a ball was played through and headed over goalkeeper Gurney, but their celebrations were cut short by the assistant referee’s flag for offside.

Rotherfield responded well, with Cameron Howard forcing a save in the 31st minute before Jack Spampanato saw his follow-up effort blocked. Despite the chances at both ends, neither side could find a breakthrough before the interval.

The second half remained a competitive affair, with Rotherfield continuing to look for openings. Howard sent a strike over the bar on the hour mark as the visitors sought the goal that would give them control of the tie.

As the game entered its closing stages, Rotherfield began to make their pressure count. The breakthrough finally arrived in the 79th minute when Dan Gray unleashed a long-range effort that sailed over the Hollington goalkeeper and into the net, sparking celebrations among the travelling Rotherfield contingent.

With the lead secured, Rotherfield showed their defensive discipline, using longer balls to keep Hollington away from their goal and limiting the home side’s opportunities to build sustained pressure.

There was still time for one late scare in stoppage time. Gurney slipped while taking a goal kick, allowing the ball to fall kindly for a Hollington forward. However, Callum Gallie and Ed Handford reacted quickly to put the attacker under pressure, doing enough to force his effort to be saved.

The final whistle confirmed a valuable cup victory for Rotherfield, who combined moments of attacking quality with a determined defensive performance to progress in the Sussex County FA Cup.
