Saturday 11th July 2026

Rotherfield FC began their pre-season schedule with a 3-0 defeat away to Loxwood on a scorching afternoon, with temperatures approaching 30°C and hydration breaks required in both halves. The prolonged dry spell in recent weeks also had a significant impact on the playing surface, which was extremely hard underfoot, bobbly and covered in yellowed grass. The conditions were the same for both sides and were a result of the lack of significant rainfall rather than any fault of the hosts.

The visitors made a positive start and more than held their own during the opening 15 minutes, matching their higher-level opponents with a disciplined and organised display. However, Loxwood took the lead in the 18th minute. A corner was swung into the box and, although James Gurney did well to punch the initial delivery away, Rotherfield were unable to clear the danger, allowing the hosts to convert the loose ball from close range.

Loxwood led 1-0 at the interval and appeared to rotate almost their entire squad for the second half, continuing to make changes throughout the game to keep fresh legs on the pitch.

Rotherfield continued to work hard after the restart and enjoyed a promising spell around the 70-minute mark, putting together some good passages of play in the final third. However, the hosts quickly turned defence into attack with a long ball over the top. Their striker raced through, rounded the advancing Gurney and calmly slotted home to double Loxwood's advantage.

Five minutes later, Gurney produced a superb save to tip a powerful long-range effort away. Unfortunately, the resulting corner wasn't dealt with effectively and, after the ball was recycled, a low strike from outside the penalty area found the bottom corner to make it 3-0.

Despite the scoreline, Rotherfield continued to battle until the final whistle. With around 10 minutes remaining, manager Wayne Clarke introduced himself from the bench and almost grabbed a consolation. His first opportunity saw him collect the ball before weaving past several defenders, only for his shot to lack the power to trouble the goalkeeper. Moments later, Clarke got on the end of an inviting cross from Cole, but his header was well saved.

Reflecting on the afternoon, manager Wayne Clarke said:

"The result was never the objective today. It was all about giving the available players minutes and also having a look at a few new players.I was impressed with our approach and the fitness of our players and look forward to building on the positives."

While the scoreline favoured the hosts, the afternoon provided valuable fitness, opportunities for new faces to impress and another important step in Rotherfield's preparations for the 2026/27 campaign. There were plenty of positives to take away despite the defeat, with the performance providing a solid foundation to build on in the weeks ahead.

Next week Rotherfield FC travel to the Caburn Comminuty Stadium to face Ringmer AFC.
