Rotherfield Show Resilience in 2–2 Draw at Hollington United
Rotherfield FC produced a spirited performance to earn a hard-fought 2–2 draw away at Hollington United in the Gray Hooper Holt LLP Mid-Sussex Football League Premier Division on Saturday 17 January 2026.
The match also saw goalkeeper James Gurney make his return to First Team football following a shoulder injury, while Phil Teague came into the side in the absence of Jack Turner.
The opening stages saw the ball spend plenty of time in the air at the Rise Electrical Gibbons Memorial Ground, with both sides adapting to a heavy playing surface made difficult by the week’s persistent rain. Clear chances were at a premium in a competitive first half, and neither team was able to gain a decisive foothold as the sides went into the break level at 0–0.
Hollington broke the deadlock early in the second half when a dangerous ball was played across goal and tapped in at the far post. Rotherfield responded impressively and were soon back on level terms, Phil Teague marking his return to the starting XI in style by showing great composure to slot home after meeting a well-delivered free kick from wide.
Buoyed by the equaliser, the Greens continued to press and were rewarded with a superb second goal as John Sinclair connected sweetly with a half-volley to put Rotherfield ahead. With momentum on their side, Rotherfield looked capable of seeing the game out, but with just over ten minutes remaining the hosts restored parity, finding the net despite James Gurney getting a hand to the effort.
Both sides pushed for a winner in the closing stages, but neither could find a decisive breakthrough, and the points were ultimately shared after an entertaining contest.
Man of the Match: James Gurney 🧤
