Rotherfield extended their unbeaten run to three matches—and an impressive 270 minutes without conceding—with a hard-fought goalless draw against Frenches Athletic in what was their fourth consecutive away fixture.
The contest proved to be an evenly matched affair, particularly in a quiet first half where clear-cut chances were at a premium. Frenches Athletic came closest to opening the scoring midway through the half, seeing a flurry of efforts blocked before a final deflected shot fell safely into the hands of James Gurney.
Rotherfield’s best opportunity of the opening period arrived ten minutes later. Sam Saunders picked up possession around 20 yards from goal and struck a powerful effort that fizzed narrowly wide, offering a glimpse of attacking intent in an otherwise subdued half. Aside from a handful of speculative attempts from both sides, neither goalkeeper was seriously tested before the break.
The second half followed a similar pattern, though Rotherfield began to grow into the game as it progressed. Just after the hour mark, Saunders had another chance from a free kick in a dangerous position, but his effort sailed over the bar.
Moments later, Rotherfield carved out arguably their best opening of the match. Connor Morrow won possession high up the pitch and drove forward before unleashing a shot from distance. The Frenches goalkeeper could only parry into the path of Scott Taylor, but he was unable to capitalise, firing over from a promising position.
As the game wore on, Rotherfield started to assert more control, applying pressure on the Frenches back line. Max Carbune delivered a long diagonal free kick from deep inside his own half, with Morrow again getting on the end of it, but his header drifted over.
With 15 minutes remaining, returning midfielder John Sinclair created an impactful moment, picking up the ball in the centre of the park and releasing Taylor who was further forward, Taylor’s pass allowed Morrow another sight of goal, but his effort rolled just wide of the post.
The closing stages became a battle of resilience, with Rotherfield’s defensive unit—Carbune, Turner, Ridley, Kerslake, and goalkeeper Gurney—standing firm against anything the hosts could muster. However, despite their late dominance, Rotherfield were unable to find a breakthrough.
In the end, both sides had to settle for a point. While the result maintains Rotherfield’s unbeaten run and defensive solidity, there may be a sense that the Greens could have done more to claim all three points.
