MATCH REPORT: AFC Uckfield Town vs Firsts

Rotherfield suffered a 3–1 defeat away at AFC Uckfield Town, with a difficult first half ultimately proving decisive despite a much-improved performance after the break.
The hosts made a lightning start, taking the lead inside the opening minute when a ball played forward by Uckfield was chipped over the advancing Gurney.
Rotherfield were then indebted to the crossbar in the fourth minute as a Uckfield free-kick struck the woodwork.
Uckfield doubled their advantage after 14 minutes. Spampanato was tackled high up the pitch, but the resulting through ball forced Gurney to come out and challenge. The loose ball fell to a Uckfield player, who was able to finish into an empty net.
Rotherfield found themselves three goals down five minutes before half-time. James Bowen became tangled up with his feet and was dispossessed, allowing the Uckfield attacker to break forward. Jack Draper attempted to make the challenge, but the forward kept his composure to slot the ball past Gurney.

Rotherfield made four changes at half-time and came out for the second half with renewed intent.
Just five minutes after the restart, Alex Cole gave Rotherfield a route back into the game with a superb individual effort. Cole went on a driving run before letting fly with a fantastic finish into the top corner.
Rotherfield continued to push for a second and came agonisingly close when Connor Morrow headed a Dan Gray corner onto the post.
The visitors showed considerably more attacking threat after the interval and worked hard to get back into the contest, but Uckfield held firm to secure the points.

The first-half performance ultimately cost Rotherfield, but there were plenty of positives to take from the response after the break, with Alex Cole's excellent finish and Connor Morrow's header against the post highlighting a much-improved second-half showing.
